Bulk Carriers

These are usually bigger ships, up to 180,000 tons and 300 metres long, so will only use the River Humber around High Tide. They always have 'right of way' over all other vessels as they can't manoeuvre quickly and need the deepest water channels to avoid running aground. They go to the Immingham Bulk Terminal and will usually carry Coke or Iron Ore for British Steel, Scunthorpe (usually from Ijmuiden, Netherlands) or carrying Wood Pellets from the USA destined for the Bio-Mass power stations in Yorkshire. It takes four tugs to stop a Bulker and get it 'docked'.
